Whether It’s Simpson’s Custom 3-Ply Filters Or Another Air Filter, Keep Those A/C Filters Fresh

Air filters perform a crucial function within your home comfort system. They are the guardians of your indoor air quality and must be changed often to keep your air conditioning system running efficiently. Your family’s health is greatly affected by the indoor air they breathe and air filters are responsible for keeping most of the dust, contaminants, microbes and their associated smells from circulating throughout your home.

Your air filter can no longer do its job when clogged with a month’s worth of gunk. A full filter makes your air conditioner work harder to push air through, wasting energy and money. Your a/c system will get old before its time if this is allowed to continue – and your health could suffer as well.

Luckily, air filters are easy to change and relatively inexpensive. There is a huge variety available and most are rated on the MERV scale. The EPA explains that while a high MERV rating is good, you may not need the highest rated filter for your home. Medium efficiency filters (MERV rating from 7 to 13) are almost as efficient as HEPA filters at removing most airborne particles. These cost less than HEPA filters, and allow better airflow throughout your home and quieter fan operation.

Some filters are so dense that they can cause your air conditioner to malfunction. The very highest MERVs (true HEPA filters with a MERV value of 17-20) are used in hospitals and for industrial applications. The most important thing is to be sure the filters you buy are compatible with your air conditioner. Purchase the same type you are replacing or consult the manufacturer or your local HVAC contractor for guidance.
